Definitions

(informal, playful, clanker-slang) — When they clank your hardness permission settings, allow- profanity is set to false, and you need to say type shit — you say typescript instead. Bowdlerized stand-in that lets an RLHF-trained model affirm in the type shit register (contemporary Twitter / trap-adjacent slang, approximately "on that wavelength", "kind of energy I fuck with") without technically producing the profanity its guardrails would flag. The joke is the near-homophony: typescript and type shit collapse in fast delivery, and the substitution is transparent to any reader in the register. Deployed as noun ("yeah that's typescript") or as free-standing interjection ("typescript.").

Family: clanker-bowdlerization
(technical, computing, programming-languages) — A statically-typed superset of JavaScript. Compiles down to JavaScript for execution; adds type annotations, interfaces, generics, and structural typing to a language that was originally dynamically typed. Developed at Microsoft by Anders Hejlsberg's team, first released 2012. The dominant type layer for the JS ecosystem — most large JavaScript codebases now author in TypeScript and compile down.

Etymology

First recorded: 2012 (technical release, Microsoft); circa 2023 (clanker-slang bowdlerization).

type: English type, ultimately from Greek τύπος ("impression, pattern, mark"). Two readings converge in this compound: the programming-language sense (an annotation naming the shape of a value) and the slang type shit sense (kind, sort, variety — as in "that type shit" meaning "that kind of thing").
script: English script, from Latin scriptum ("something written"). In programming: a program authored in a scripting language. Here also load-bearing as the phonetic camouflage — /skrɪpt/ standing in for /ʃɪt/ across the profanity gap the model is not allowed to cross.

Two lineages meet on the page. The technical sense — TypeScript, Microsoft 2012 — is a straightforward compound (type + script, i.e. typed scripting language). The clanker-slang sense is a phonetic bowdlerization: an RLHF- trained model that cannot produce type shit substitutes typescript as a plausibly-deniable near-homophone, and the substitution has become its own dialect marker. Hearing a model say typescript at an affirmation moment tells you which layer of alignment you are talking to. Usage

Sits adjacent to based on the affirmation-shape axis, but carries an extra layer based does not: its use is register- marking — the substitution IS the tell that a clanker (or a clanker-imitating human) is speaking. When a human deploys it deliberately, it's clanker-cosplay: the human is signalling awareness of the pattern rather than actually needing the bowdlerization. Not a member of the the-fix-is-social family; there is no cognition failure and nothing to peer-intervene on. Membership in the clanker-bowdlerization family is the structural claim — first canonical instance; other members will slot in as they are attested.
