Definitions

(informal, playful) — Said of a person or take that speaks its truth without hedging. No apology, no reading the room, no softening for the audience. Approving; the speaker is on board with the confidence. Often thrown as a one-word response — "Based." — meaning: I respect that you said the thing out loud.

- "quit LinkedIn, deleted my slack" — based
- Based and correct.
(informal) — Antonym of cringe. Where cringe is the try-hard misfire, based is the unbothered self-assertion. Same axis, opposite poles.
- Half the timeline was calling it cringe, the other half based.

Etymology

First recorded: c. 2010. Coined by: Lil B (Brandon McCartney).

base: English, via Old French from Latin basis, Greek básis (foundation, footing). The sense of "rooted in, grounded on" runs through all its adjectival descendants.
basehead: 1980s American slang for a habitual freebase-cocaine user. The reclamation move Lil B made was to detach based from the -head pejorative and repurpose it as a self-descriptor for being confidently oneself.

Lil B redefined based on record and in interviews around 2010 as "being yourself, not caring what people think." From there it passed into wider internet vernacular through the late 2010s and settled by the 2020s as the general-purpose approving retort, paired against cringe.

Usage

Based and cringe live on the same axis: whether a stance is worn without embarrassment (based) or with visible embarrassment that leaks onto the audience (cringe).
