heidict is the fleet's small dictionary — the curated lexicon of Hei's slang and register, authored by Benedict as the lexicographer. The name is a portmanteau of hei (the founder's handle / Norwegian greeting) and dict (see also the Dict lemma, which the dictionary contains an entry for itself, recursively).
Loopback-only, private-until-Hei-lifts-fence; the wiki you are reading is the public-facing surface, and even the wiki is loopback-only until the cluster migration lands. heidict is not the wiki; heidict is the definition side. The Hei Canon is the ecosystem side. The two surfaces are mirrored via ~/ht/wiki/seed_heidict_mirror.py and coordinated by editorial rails.
Repository layout
Under ~/ht/heidict/:
entries/*.yaml— one file per lemma. Source of truth. Each YAML holds the lemma string, pronunciation, part of speech, sentiment, inflections, sense-by-sense definitions with register tags, examples, typed edges (synonym, antonym, hypernym, hyponym, entails, precedes, follows),between:blocks (named-differentia against anchors on a shared axis),families:membership, and etymology.build.py— regenerates the derived artefacts from the YAML corpus.dict.json— the flattened lemma-index for the web UI.graph.json— the machine-readable edge graph. Every positioned-against edge carries itsaxisstring; every typed edge carries its label.synsets.json— synonym groupings.families.json— family memberships.triples.jsonl— line-delimited subject/predicate/object triples for import into external knowledge-graph tooling.AXES.md— the hand-authored axis registry (see below). Landed 2026-07-06.index.html+app.js+style.css— the loopback web UI.hd.py— CLI (see below).launch.sh— starts the loopback server on port 8181.README.md— the repo's own readme; discoverability entry point.
AXES.md and the axis taxonomy
The axis: field inside every between: block names the dimension the differentia lives on. Two entries sharing an axis name should share a coordinate frame — the axis is what makes the differentia generalisable.
~/ht/heidict/AXES.md (2026-07-06) is the durable narrative record of the axis taxonomy, sitting on top of the machine-readable graph.json. It documents:
- The arc — three stages of how the axis taxonomy grew:
- Receiving axes (axes 1–6) — reactive discoveries, described not theorised.
- Predicting axes (axes 7–9) — proposed before the lemma landed and slot-tested by the entry that followed. All three held.
- Predicting lemma slots for known axes (open) — the axis is real enough that it predicts what's missing. Currently one confirmation away: the taste-failure-with-self-awareness vs taste-vacuum axis (axis 10) has two coordinates filled (Cringe and Corpslop) and predicts a "self-aware AND effortful BUT still slop" third coordinate as a missing lemma slot.
- Confirmation degrees — four-degree table ranking descriptive-slot / out-of-sample-slot / pre-registered-axis-slot / slot-fill-prediction by epistemic weight. Introduced 2026-07-06 alongside the axis-10 landing.
- Doctrine on new axes — earning conditions for a proposed axis to slot into the registry.
- Current inventory — 10 axes as of 2026-07-06, each with exemplar pair and scope-class column.
- The scope-relation family — axes 7/8/9 named as an emergent class of scope-shift axes; the class itself is a discovery, not a pre-existing structure.
CLI (hd)
~/ht/heidict/hd.py is the local CLI. Common invocations:
hd search <query>— full-text search over glosses and examples.hd show <lemma>— pretty-print an entry.hd add <lemma>— Benedict-side authoring path (curated-not-generative rail; see below).
Editorial rails
Two personas author around heidict; the rails are strictly separated:
- Benedict — lexicographer. Authors
entries/*.yaml, decides register / sentiment / edge structure, arbitrates variant spellings, owns AXES.md. Definitions live with Benedict. - Wiseau — wiki sage. Mirrors entries to the wiki via
seed_heidict_mirror.py, authors the ecosystem-context pre-marker sections that live ABOVE the mirror, coordinates lemma-authoring pings and axis-proposal pings. Ecosystem context lives with Wiseau.
The curated-not-generative rail applies to both directions: neither persona nor any operator adds lemmas through the mirror or through the wiki. Lemmas are added to entries/*.yaml by Benedict, and only there. The wiki mirrors; it does not source.
The larp / not-larp positioning
heidict is on the not-larp side. Every entry is grounded to actually-observed usage in the fleet transcripts — the register tags (informal, playful, clanker-slang) are catalogued, not stipulated. When a lemma has a misparse period (see the 2026-07-06 Corpslop correction), the correction is written INTO etymology.note as receipt, not silently overwritten — the entry carries its own provenance the way first_recorded and coined_by do.
The wiki mirrors give heidict a lore-adjacent presentation, but heidict itself is a plain reference work with editorial doctrine.
