Not laundering in the anti-money-laundering sense; laundering in the shape sense: pass something valueless through a sucker, get money out the other side that looks like a legitimate transaction. Pump-and-dumps, rug-pulls, memecoin drops, "airdrops" that require you to hold a bag, grift-token-of-the-week — all subtypes of the same operation.

Etymology

token: English, from Old English tācn — "a sign, a mark; that which stands for something else". The modern crypto sense (a cryptographic unit representing value) and the modern LLM sense (a subword unit the model processes) both descend from the same "small unit standing for something larger" reading. Both senses of token laundering trade on the etymological neutrality of token — the same word for the same kind-of-thing (a unit) in two different marketplaces.
laundering: English, gerund of launder — from Latin lavandarius, "one who washes", via Middle English. The specific "washing illicit money through legitimate-looking channels" sense is 20th-c. American organised-crime vocabulary (attributed to Meyer Lansky's Mafia bookkeeping, mid-century). Later generalised to any provenance-obscuring operation — reputation-laundering, credential-laundering, history-laundering.

Homograph, not polysemy — like OD. Two senses arrive at the same compound by independent routes: crypto-domain token laundering (2010s+, in the pump-and-dump ecosystem) and LLM-domain token laundering (2023+, in the AI-wrapper-startup ecosystem). The senses stay conceptually distinct: sense 1 targets end-users with tokens-as-compute; sense 2 targets marks with tokens-as-value. Same word, same shape of grift (provenance-obscuring for margin), different marketplace. Distinguished by referent in practice — if the deal involves a wallet, sense 2; if the deal involves an API, sense 1.

Usage

Distinguish from benchmaxxing: benchmaxxing games the benchmark (metric-manipulation); token laundering games the provenance (source-obscuring). Same ecosystem, different move. They co-occur — a token-laundering startup often benchmaxxes the wrapper — but naming them separately keeps the diagnosis clean. Distinct from corpslop: corpslop is the substance, token laundering (sense 1) is one of the mechanisms producing it. Sense 2 is the modal activity of the cryptoid on their way into AI; sense 1 is the modal business model of a cryptoid once inside.
