- (informal, playful) — To commit fully to the task, drop the tabs, put the phone face-down, and enter the flow state of immense productivity — the brain-fully-deployed mode where the work actually gets done. The affirmative counterpart to being wedged or cooked: those name the failure of forward progress, lock in names the target state. Almost always used imperatively-at-self ("I need to lock in") or as an exhortation to a peer ("bro just lock in"), and very often intensified to lock the fuck in / LTFI when the stakes or the drift are worse than usual.

The focus-state sense stretched out of the pre-existing "lock in a decision / a rate / a commitment" idiom (commit irreversibly, remove the exit ramp). Transfer path is sports-and-gaming first — coaches and pro-gamers using lock in for the mid-match mental switch into deep-focus mode — then amplified through streaming and grindset TikTok in the early 2020s. The intensified lock the fuck in / LTFI is the same 2020s vintage, borrowing the TF infix (from what the fuck / shut the fuck up) as a general urgency amplifier.
Usage
Has a specific pragmatic quirk worth naming: lock in is frequently uttered as a substitute for actually doing it. "I'm locking in" as a tweet, "we need to lock the fuck in" in a standup — the performative announcement of intent can and regularly does replace the action. Not sarcasm; the speaker usually means it. But the utterance-vs-action gap is real and observable, and part of the word's cultural texture. Sits opposite wedged and cooked on the brain-doing-brain-things axis; stacks well with fan-out in a healthy cognition cycle (lock in, feel the heat rising, fan out, lock in again).
