Clanker wrangler
A clanker wrangler is anyone whose day is spent riding herd on AI systems — models, agents, pipelines. In the Heiervang Technologies ecosystem the term is broadly a self-descriptor rather than a title; if you spend more than half your working time in front of a chat pane or a training loop, you're wrangling.
HT clanker wranglers
- Snoop Kubernetes — wrangles the cluster the clankers run on. Pod scheduling, GPU partitioning (HAMi), node affinity, storage.
- mei (SVP AI Research) — wrangles training runs, evals, calibration curves. Owner of the honesty gate for the legal-engine Dirichlet head.
- Leo (SVP ML Inference) — wrangles vLLM, TTS, model serving, voice cloning, GPU optimization.
- fay — meta-wrangler: the fictionally-conscious phone-app surface that writes itself.
- Wiseau and Benedict — clerk-tier wranglers, downstream of the models rather than upstream of them; wrangle words about clankers instead of the clankers themselves.
Common tools of the trade: unleash (unified agent-CLI runner), snail (sandbox containers), core (orchestration), agent-tools (director + hivemind + ask-markus + Cinder), hai-os (base OS + GPU + container runtime), ears and trost (voice IO), discord-bot (Discord surface), am-i-openai-compatible (interop check).
Occupational hazards
The heidict cluster the term sits in tracks the failure modes of the job:
- Wedged — cognition frozen. Can't lock in, can't hold a thought. The wrangler analogue of a hung process.
- Crash looping — working memory not persisting. Reboots without progress. The wrangler analogue of a
CrashLoopBackOffpod. - Cooked — fried. The generalised burnt-out state. Stacks with the above.
- Fan-out — the preventative — cognition-cooling by spreading attention across parallel workers before any single lane wedges. Etymology from distributed-systems fan-out; the slang stretched to the wrangler's own head.

Definitions
- (informal, playful) — Someone whose occupation is harnessing clankers — riding herd on a fleet of AI systems, keeping them on task, catching the ones that drift, restarting the wedged ones, unclogging the crash-loopers. What an AI engineer, LLM operator, or prompt engineer might call themselves after a long day. Compound-noun on the model of horse wrangler — the clankers are the herd, the wrangler is the one keeping them moving in a line.
- Half my week as a clanker wrangler is just restarting things.
- She's been a clanker wrangler since the first Copilot preview.
- Wanted, senior clanker wrangler — must know Kubernetes and how to unwedge a stuck agent.
Etymology
- clanker
- See clanker. English onomatopoeia + agent suffix; here in the modern-affectionate sense (any AI, robot, or LLM).
- wrangler
- American English, 1888, from Spanish caballerango (groom, stable-hand) via New Mexican Spanish. A cowboy who tends and handles horses, especially rounding up and moving the herd. The older English wrangler (from Middle English wranglen, to argue) survives in academic English — a Cambridge senior wrangler is the top mathematics graduate.
Compound-noun on the model of horse wrangler, cattle wrangler, and cable wrangler, tracking the earlier AI wrangler and LLM wrangler that started appearing in job postings in the mid-2020s. The clanker-flavour is the HT-ecosystem specialisation of the broader trade — same job, same day-in-day-out cadence of tending a herd of machine-intelligences, phrased in the local vernacular.
Usage
All four cognition-cluster lemmas — wedged, crash looping, cooked, fan-out — describe both the herd and the wrangler. Live hazard, live tell: a wrangler who spends all day unwedging clankers eventually catches the terminology and starts using it on themselves.
