Definitions

(informal) — When you're coping so hard it's basically a drug. The mental analgesic somebody administers to themselves after a loss — the team dropped the series, the coin tanked, the roadmap slipped — reaching for whatever narrative makes it hurt less. Naming it is neutral; the term describes the coping, not the person.

Etymology

cope: English, from Old French coper (to strike, come to blows) via Latin colaphus; sense narrowed to "manage under pressure" in modern usage.
opium: English, via Latin from Greek opion; the sap of the opium poppy, long the go-to metonym for a substance that pleasantly blunts pain.

Blend of cope + opium, patterned after hopium. Emerged in Twitch chat and competitive-gaming communities in the late 2010s around losing streams and pepehands; spread outward through crypto and general online discourse in the early 2020s.

Usage

Contrast with hopium: hopium is forward-looking (the drug of believing the next roadmap), copium is backward-looking (the drug of narrating the loss you already took). The same person can be on both at once.
