Cryptoid

Cryptoid is the larper who came from crypto and has now discovered that he was actually building AI infrastructure the entire time. Same founder, same microphone, new meaning of token.
The cryptoid follows the liquidity. Last cycle it was a DAO. This cycle it is an agent swarm. The pitch survives because almost none of it described the thing being built.
The pivot
The migration requires a new bio, a replacement noun in the deck, and a podcast appearance about how early we all are. The old roadmap quietly disappears. The new roadmap ends at the same exchange listing.
In the canon's larper taxonomy, the cryptoid preserves the founder costume while rotating through whatever substrate currently pays. Technical depth is optional; access to a microphone is urgent. Somebody else can work out what the agents do after the announcement.
Podcast specimen
The pictured cryptoid retains the Bitcoin medallion while explaining the future. His shirt reads NGMI / I'M EARLY. The portfolio and the thesis have issued separate statements.
The microphone is correctly positioned. Whether anything behind it is shipping remains unclear.
Adjacent life
The AI bloomer wants AI to work. The cryptoid wants to have been early to whatever works. Both can sound bullish on the same podcast; ask what they built and the conversation separates itself.
The Chuddite rejects AI on sight. The cryptoid embraces it on sight of funding. A failed pivot can supply enough copium to turn one into the other: suddenly the technology was always a scam, and the next thing is the real thing.
Benchmaxxing supplies the chart. Token laundering supplies something to invoice. Neither is proof of a cryptoid on its own; the tell is the repeated pivot with the conviction left in the previous deck.

Definitions
- (informal, playful, derogatory, tech-slang) — A crypto bro larping their way into the field of AI. Names the specific migration pattern of the 2023+ pivot: the grifter who spent the previous cycle shilling memecoins, NFTs, and DeFi rug-pulls, and who — sensing the vibe shift — is now shilling "AI-native infrastructure", "agentic protocols", and wrapper-startups, with the same energy, the same pitch deck template, the same taste for benchmaxxing and token laundering, and the same absence of any real technical depth. The -oid suffix does the work: it says the person is crypto-shaped (has the form, the mannerisms, the wallet history) but not crypto proper anymore, and it signals — via the same suffix as humanoid, factoid, tabloid — that the resemblance is the point, not the substance. A cryptoid in an AI conference is a humanoid in an uncanny-valley animation: technically similar shape, missing whatever it is that makes the real thing real.
- the panel was three researchers and four cryptoids arguing about "compute rails"
- his GitHub is a graveyard of cryptoid pivots — DeFi, DAO tooling, now "agent orchestration"
- watch him drop agentic and token in the same sentence, full cryptoid
- VC's whole portfolio is cryptoids running token laundering wrappers
- anti-cryptoid pattern-match: if the founder's twitter bio changed from 🌌 to 🤖 in Q4 2022, you know
- Hypernym: Larp (sense 1)
- Entails: Benchmaxxing (sense 1), Token laundering (sense 1)
Etymology
- crypto
- English clipping of cryptocurrency (itself Greek kryptos "hidden" + English currency). Names the whole subculture, marketplace, and identity-signature of the 2010s+ cryptocurrency scene — not just the technology but the vibe, the pitch shape, the pattern of extractive-behaviour- dressed-as-innovation.
- -oid
- English suffix from Greek -oeidēs, "resembling". Long productive in scientific taxonomy (humanoid, anthropoid, androgenoid) and in popular derogatory coinage (factoid, Norman Mailer 1973, "something that looks like a fact but isn't"; tabloid for cheap newspapers; Trumpoid etc.). Carries a consistent semantic load — resembling but not being — with a mild pejorative undertone: whatever -oid names, it's the outer form without the inner substance.
Compound of crypto + -oid — "resembling a crypto person, but not (still) one". Names not a static identity but a migration state: the person who was crypto and now performs AI, retaining the form (grifter's tools) while swapping the referent (AI vocab instead of DeFi vocab). The coinage relies on -oid's consistent "outer form, missing substance" semantic — same shape as factoid saying a claim is fact-shaped-but-not-fact. Emerged in 2023+ AI-critical Twitter/BlueSky discourse as the LLM boom began pulling former-crypto capital and personnel into "AI startups".
Usage
Complementary to chuddite on the AI-relationship axis: chuddites reject AI reactively (bad-faith rejection); cryptoids embrace AI opportunistically (bad-faith adoption). Both are performances — the difference is the direction the performance points. A cryptoid who fails hard enough often chuds out in the other direction ("AI was a bubble the whole time"), completing the arc back to reactionary-adjacent posture. Distinct from based: based is high-conviction taste that names the truth; cryptoid is low-conviction opportunism that names whatever's liquid. Watch for the tells: agentic used four times in a minute; the word infrastructure about a wrapper; a wallet address in the email signature; the phrase "coming from web3 I've noticed..." delivered unprompted.
