New in the canon — Lensball
A cap of the source sphere wrapped onto a hand-held lens sphere

A Lensball is a small movable sphere that shows a local view of a much larger space. Turn the ball and the view slides across the source; every point keeps its identity, nothing jumps, and the rule that says how the view moves is part of the object. The article gives the plain idea, the software framing, the mathematics (rotation states, cut loci, holonomy, the seam of a full-sphere display) and an audited account of what is new and what is borrowed.
